In 2020, Lindsey McInnes faced a life altering challenge when she suffered a compression of her spinal cord. This traumatic injury left her without feeling in both legs and stripped her of control over her bladder and bowels. In the midst of this struggle, Lindsey made a promise to herself: if she recovered from her surgeries, she would complete an Ironman to raise money for others who weren’t as fortunate.

The Road to Recovery
Lindsey's journey was not easy. She underwent multiple surgeries and faced grueling rehabilitation, pushing through pain and uncertainty. Each day was a test of her strength and determination. Despite the immense challenges, she held onto her dream of becoming an Ironman, using it as motivation to fight for her recovery.
A Commitment to Others
Lindsey’s promise was not just for herself; it was also a commitment to those who had faced similar or worse challenges. She aimed to raise awareness and funds for spinal cord injury research, ensuring that others would have a chance at recovery and a better quality of life. This mission fueled her throughout her journey, reminding her why she was fighting so hard.
The Challenges
Lindsey encountered numerous obstacles on her path to the Ironman. One of the most significant challenges was her insanely busy work schedule. Balancing a demanding job with her training was no small feat; she had to carve out time for workouts amidst her hectic routine, often waking up early or training late into the evening. Her commitment to her goal meant prioritizing her health and fitness, even when life got overwhelming.
Additionally, transitioning from a short-distance butterfly swimmer to an endurance athlete presented its own set of difficulties. She once said in the first swimming training. “This is the most freestyle that I have swam in my life”. Lindsey focused on building her stamina and confidence on cycling - dedicating countless hours to prepare for the long distances of the Ironman. This shift was essential for her success, requiring perseverance and dedication.
Finally, the physical discomfort from a metal plate inserted in her spine added another layer of challenge. Following her spinal surgeries, the plate made it painful and uncomfortable for her to be on the bike for long hours. Despite this discomfort, Lindsey refused to give up. She pushed through the pain, using her determination to enhance her cycling endurance. Through these challenges, Lindsey demonstrated remarkable resilience, proving that with determination, anything is possible.
